Social Creature

In Tara Isabella Burton's Social Creature, this domestic suspense debut is so creepy about obsession in a toxic relationship. Both Louise Wilson and Lavinia Williams are blond young women in their late twenties. When Louise lands a SAT tutoring job for Cordelia, Lavinia's younger sister, they met and bond and become fast best friends. Lavinia is rich and living a good life when she introduces Louise to the NYC party life including her friends. They drink, do drugs, smoke, and stay up late. They're both writers and wants to make a name for themselves. Louise is poor, barely making ends meet with a few PT jobs to help keep her afloat, and wants what Louise has. They do everything together when Louise falls for Rex, Lavinia's ex, which puts a kink on everything when they later have a blow up fight and she accidentally kills her. Now it's up to Louise to dispose of her dead body and pretend "Lavinia" is alive and well in another location when she lives at her home and fools everything by mooching over her money. But how long can she keep up with this façade until the truth comes out and covers up her tracks before she makes a run for it before it's too late with a twisted ending that would give you goosebumps.

This debut was fantastic and intriguing to read from the start to the last page. I loved the 2015 New York City backdrop that took place during a couple months for the location that painted the scenic settings. I did care for Louise in the beginning and how her world changed when she met Lavinia as a new friend and lived a posh lifestyle. I did think Lavinia was a bit too much of a social butterfly, but did feel sorry when she lost her life and Louise took over. My feelings flip-flopped between them throughout them.  The themes are to be watch your back and be careful who you friend since looks can be more than deceiving.

If you love spine-tingling dark domestic noir novels with heart-pounding drama, plenty of insane suspense, lots of action with surprising twists and turns, check out Social Creature today.

What Lies Between Us

In John Marrs' What Lies Between Us, this thriller is so twisted and creepy on every page from start to finish. For Nina Simmonds, she always wondered what happened to her father when she was a teenager. Her mother Maggie told her lies that he left them and went away. But is that the truth? From there, there was so many secrets between this mother and daughter that stemmed way beyond her turbulent youth. Ever since then, in flashback sequences, we get to learn how deceitful her mother was to her when she was a "wild child" and had gotten herself pregnant twice with the same man who was ten years her senior. That's when they hated each other and the resentment begin to grew and fester like a cancerous cell. Then we return to the present and how they treated each other while they both remained a prisoner in their old family home. Like the old adage of what goes around and comes out with karma, these actions spoke louder than words when Nina imprisoned her own mother in an upstairs bedroom in the same home. Only Nina knows she's there while Maggie harbored secrets of the past herself and what led her doomed fate there and plans to escape. After years of secrets and lies, Nina begins to dig and search for the truth on what happened her then and now when she turns the tables on her mother and turns cold like a trek in the Arctic Circle. Then it spirals out of control when she learns what she's been missing and how she could pay it back when her jealous rage burns like a wildfire until the ultimate climax that would take your breath away on how it would end.

This was a gripping thriller about how far people would call to seek revenge--even a loved one--to some extent. I did feel sorry for Nina in the beginning on how Maggie lied to her throughout the years and how that tormented her, even if it might be for her best interest at heart. I begin to despise Maggie and then switched gears when I felt the opposite in the second half of the book. That's how intense it can flip your feelings for these two unbelievable characters. I loved the locations in Leiceister and other parts of England, especially this haunted old house they lived in for years and  had endlessly tortured each other.   The theme is to be careful with secrets you keep and the lies you tell when it would bite you in the butt later on.

The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea

In Kerrelyn Sparks's the Siren and the Deep Blue Sea, the 2nd installment and the 5th book in the Embraced paranormal romance series, this magical tale would sweep you off your feet and carry you away with the tides.  Maeve had lived in a convent and adopted by four sisters who grew up to be princesses and queens except for her. All her life , she loved Brody since they were teenagers. During her search for him, she needs to locate the Embraced Army on the Isle of Secrets. Brody's not an ordinary human. Due to a curse, he shifts into a dog for most of his life and other animals of humans. After Queen Cahira blew up his father's ship and killed his brother, he was washed ashore and rescued by the Seer, Burien, and grew up on his land. Before the Seer died, he wanted Brody to take over for him to destroy Cahira and the Circle of Five. And he lived up to his promise to spy on the queen. But that's when he ran into Maeve and that complicated things for each other's journey. On the isle, Maeve learns a surprising secrets about her parents and her powers.Though they secretly loved each other for years, they had to defied the odds to fight good vs evil to get that happy ending they so much deserved.

This is a beautiful paranormal romance with excellent visual descriptions and mesmerizing settings to take you there on a wild journey. I cared for Maeve, who longed for Brody, and wanted to fit in with her other sisters. She needed a sense of belonging to find her calling and to look for her own true love. I loved how she could shift into a seal, have a beautiful singing voice as a Siren, and later become a Seer and Queen. Talk about multi-tasking different powers to rule that world and give it a peaceful happy ending to the series. My heart went to Brody who was cursed to be a dog and had two hours of human life, when he wanted to be king and take Maeve as his wife. I also loved the side story of Brody's sister Elinor had found an expected love with Nevis Harden, a sea-faring general. The Isles of Moon, Mist and Secrets were mystical and magical for this paranormal romance for this fantastic novel. The themes are to follow your heart and love will set you free to battle evil.

If you love to be transported to other places with heart-stopping drama, plenty of excellent magical action, tons of suspense, and a spark of romance, check out the Siren and the Deep Blue Sea today.

Sweet Water

In Cara Reinard's newest domestic suspense debut, Sweet Water, this shocking tale will send bone-numbing shockwaves on every page from start to finish. For Sarah Denning, she had everything she could dream of when she married Martin Ellsworth, her college sweetheart, and lived in the life of luxury in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. But when Sarah and Martin discovers their son Finn next to a dead woman near the lake, it changed everything on what they did and didn't do. They left the crime scene and took their son back home for evaluation. She questioned everything about her relationship with Martin, like when she met him in college in flashbacks, and throughout her twenty-year marriage. The Ellsworth had political and law enforcement connections to control, manipulate, and distort everything like making evidence disappear to cover up their tracks. They've been doing it for year when law is powerful with money. As Sarah begins to learn more about what happened to Finn that night, the chain reaction of dominoes falls into place, and secrets resurface front and center. She's determined more than ever to discover the truth even if it might cost her everything until it came tumbling down when her house was set on fire. This gave her the encourage to free herself from her Martin and his family's house of cards to knock it down to the ground in a shocking and twisting ending you would never believe.

This was a fantastic new domestic suspense novel. I instantly cared about Sarah and what kind of relationship she had with Martin and what she would've had with Josh if he didn't say goodbye. We can see how she cares for her sons and how she tried to make things right even if it might cost her everything she had dear. She placed her heart on the line to discover so many cover-ups right from the beginning to cut to the heart of the matter. I rooted for her and felt the same disgust Martin and his family had done in the past.  I loved the location of Sewickley PA, when everything wasn't so sweet for Sarah like she'd first thought.  The scenic settings were mesmerizing to place you there. The theme is to secrets are bound to come out in the open if you don't do the right things.

Outfox

In Sandra Brown's Outfox, this would leave you at the edge of your seat with this fascinating and ultimate cat-and-mouse tale. For FBI Agent Drex Easton, he's been after one goal for many years: to seize and capture a ruthless serial killer named Jasper Ford, a chameleon who changes his names and identities for every kill for over thirty years. And this hits home and close to home for Drex, who considered this his personal mission with this endless pursuit. So he goes undercover as a writer and lives next door to Jasper and his younger wife, Talia, to eavesdrop on their private investigations. But he's fascinated with Talia and kept his distance--is she a friend or foe? As Jasper pulls a disappearing act when a family friend has a boating accident, Drex knew it's Jasper all allong and gets closer to Talia, while FBI Rudkowski's breathing down his neck. The sparks fly between Drex and Talia in the heat of the moment and learns more intimate details on Jasper's weird habits. For this chase, the cat has captured his mouse in a fitting battle of truth and lies with a showdown you will never believe in the end.

This was so captivating and mind-blowing from start to finish with many endless twists and turns right up to the end. I did care for Drex Easton, (I've wondered what his real name was, though never mentioned, or how his father came up with the name), and how he made a vow to his father to find his mother's killer, no matter how many years it would take. I loved how he had many tricks up his sleeves to get the upper hand, until the tables were turned halfway through the novel. I cared for Talia and how she dealt with Jasper's callousness and how she had the last word in the bitter end. Jasper seriously had it coming! I loved the dual locations of Lexington and South Carolina, which was painted so well with picturesque and mesmerizing scenic settings. The themes are to be careful on whom you trust and watch your back, because your past might catch up to you.
