Special review: Mew is for Murder from November 2008

In Clea Simon's Mew is for Murder, the first installment in the Theda Krakow cozy mystery series,  you'll be charmed by Theda and her love for cats. Poor Theda. Her boyfriend was gone for good, while she mourned the loss of her cat, and she just made a big career leap that left her finances flat.  During a stroll in Cambridge, she spotted an adorable stray kitten. It had led her to a decrepit old home of Lillian Helmhold, who was a classic cat hoarder in her home. This story intrigued her enough to help get her out of the dumps. But when she interviewed her, she found Lillian's dead body of an apparent accident. But when the cops weren't interested on solving the case, it lead Theda to do some investigating of her own with a cast of wild suspects. As she'd gotten closer to the truth, this had shaken her to the core.

This was a delightful and charming cozy mystery debut. I cared about Theda and her love of animals, mainly cat. She helped rescue those cats and solved a mystery, too. I did become concerned about Lillian's obsessive cat hoarding issues. I loved the Cambridge location and the scenic settings in every scene. This is perfect for a light and breezy book to read, since it had a hint of romance, plenty of intrigue, suspense, and drama along the way.

True Grey

In Clea Simon's True Grey, the 5th installment in the Dulcie Schwartz cozy mystery series, she returned for another gripping mystery that happened right under her nose. In this one, Dulcie who taught an English class at Harvard, was stuck in a bind. First it started with a dream. Later, it turned out to be a terrible reality. While she worked on her thesis, she discovered that someone else wrote about the subject on her paper. But things had gotten complicated, when she learned about a visiting scholar who was coming by the college, and came across a dead body. Now it was up to Dulcie and her friends to find out what was going on, while she felt the heat and pressure from the dean, and haven't seen much of her boyfriend Chris either. They believed she was a person of interest, when she was being framed by someone who had it in with her. We really saw what Dulcie struggled and went through, including some talks with her late cat, Mr. Grey, and her cat, Esme, to pose a thought or two for her. A little paranormal twist makes this a delightful feline cozy to read and enjoy.

This was an intriguing and compelling cat cozy with a hint of paranormal for a twist. I really did care about Dulcie and her relationship with Chris. There was so much going on in her life. I liked the Harvard settings and locations in Massachusetts. It was idealistic and true to nature of college life for students and faculty. This was a pleasurable cozy for light reading with its non-stop action, drama, intrigue and some mystery along the way.

Probable Claws

In Clea Simon's Probable Claws, the 4th installment in the Theda Krakow feline cozy series, you will fall in love with Theda.  When Theda learned that someone poisoned kittens with bad cat food, she investigated the issue to find out what really went on. When she talked to Dr. Rachel, someone attacked her and then killed Rachel, while they framed her for the murder. While she ws on bail, she tried to put the pieces together in Rachel's life, while she savaged her relationship with Bill as someone sabotaged her journalism career as well. In the end, she discovered the truth with a shocking ending.

This was an enjoyable cozy to read that featured cats. I do care for Theda, while someone set her up for being the fall guy--or shall we say, fall gal. I do love the feline aspect of it, too, when it had put the heart of the matter of animal abuse of the worst and cruel kind. I do love the Boston location with depicted and lovely scenic location and settings. This would make you root for Theda with great drama, non-stop action, some mystery with a hint of intrigue along the way.
