The Survivor

In Gregg Hurwitz's The Survivor, this thriller would hook you on the first page on this intense fast-paced roller coaster ride that would leave you at the edge of your seat. For Nate Overbay, he was a former Vet dealing with a severe case of PTSD and dying slowly from ALS disease. On the day he contemplated suicide, a bank robbery took place down below. So Nate became a hero and averted their plans from going further. He didn't want special attention from the press as he worked for the LAPD as a Crisis Responding Officer for families. But he haven't forgotten the bone-chilling message from the last man standing from the robbery that his life would be in peril. Later he's kidnapped from Pavlo, the leader of the Ukranian mob, who have a death wish for him. Since he foiled their bank robbery plans, he needed him to grab something from a safety deposit vault and report to him in three days. Although Nate was estranged from his wife and daughter, he needed to set things right with them and explain the dire situation with them, including revealing the news that he was dying and don't have much time to life. Haunted by his late partner from the war's ghost, it was up to Nate to protect his family and find out what's the connection on a special list of names. If he could get them to time, he would be a hero for his family and put his life on his line one last time with an explosive ending.

This was a spine-tingling thriller for sure. I did care for Nate who was dealt with a lot in his final days and hours. I was happy that he had found peace and solace with his family before his time ran out. I'm glad he made amends and make a hero that they would be proud of. I did care for Janie and Cielle, who did fine without him, but did patch things up with them as he protected them the best he could from danger.  I did love the LA intense settings and the gripping location shots from all over California for this thriller. This would make you want to hold your breath and feel exhausted in the end with non-stop action, suspense, drama, and plenty of mystery right to the end.

The Kill Clause

This was the series that started it all for Gregg Hurwitz. In the Kill Clause,  the first book in the Tim Rackley thriller series, we're introduced to Andrea and Timothy Rackley. They just had lost their little girl to a brutal murder. Both of them were U.S. Deputy Marshals, when this tragedy struck home. Their grief tore them apart and gave them a brief separation from the pain. When there was a travesty of injustice, due to a technicality, the killer had gotten out scot-free. And things had gotten interesting from there, when we watched Tim quit his job and later got mysteriously recruited by the Commission.  Or so it seemed, as they dispense justice to those who shouldn't walk the earth their way. Later on, when things went awry, things turned deadly and the truth Tim had been looking for wasn't too good, when there was a near fatal end game between those who've wronged him and how he paid the price for it. For Tim and Andrea, we saw how their sorrow drove them apart and brought them together, stronger than ever. What a rush for a thrill ride in this thriller.

This was a gripping thriller debut. I did real feel the same sorrow as the Rackleys did. I felt their grief, their anguish, and their heartache. I became intrigued about the Commission and had doubts about it as well. I hated to see Tim and Andrew grow apart and fight, and then later was pleased to see them back together.  I didn't like their own so-called vigilante-like justice. I liked the central location of Virginia for this series as well. This would grip you from the first page and reel you in like a big fin in the ocean.  You'll be hooked in no time. Great drama, intense action and plenty of intriguing thrills on every page turn in this book.

The Program

If you love intense thrillers, you'll enjoy Gregg Hurwitz's The Program. In the 2nd installment of the Tim Rackley Thriller series, Tim Rackley had been recruited by Will Henning to extradite his step-daughter Leah from a cult, once he retrieved his badge back from the US Marshals. With no information to go on, he looked for clues and talked to past and current cult members to get his ticket in. Under a new persona, he went to the Program, a mind-control colloquium, when he saw Leah. From there, he found his way to talk to her and to get her out, while he now wound up with a special VIP ticket. From there, he convinced Leah proof of what the Teacher did, and discovered a way out, after he created an intervention. From there, things went awry, when his cover was blown, and she was in danger. In the end, he brought it all down and returned Leah safe. What an enjoyable thrill ride.

This was another shocking and explosive thriller. I still continue to care about Tim Rackley, and and I also cared about the Hennings as well. I did feel bad for Leah, who ended up in a cult. I did like the central Virginia area for the location of the settings. I didn't like the program one bit and the people, including the creepy Teacher, who were involved in it. This would leave you breathless and shaking all over. Great drama, excellent suspense and action, and tons of intrigue along the way.
