Special review: To Die For from October 2008

In the first installment of Linda Howard's Blair Mallory series, To Die For, we were introduced to Blair Mallory in this two-part romantic suspense series.  Blair Mallory was pretty, confident, and a successful owner of a fitness center. But a troubled club member had a strange fixation on Blair and imitated her style, until Blair witnessed the horror of her being shot. When the media speculated about the homicide, that's when she locked horns with Police Lieutenant Wyatt Bloodsworth. He wanted to lead the investigation without interference, but Blair wanted to search for clues on her own. But when Blair received menacing threats, Wyatt took notice and did anything to protect Blair from the killer.

This was a gripping romantic suspense. I did care about Blair and became worried, when someone imitated her and then later threatened her. I did suspect that the sparks would fly between Blair and Wyatt at some point.  I did like the fitness center theme and the small town location for this series as well. This would leave you speechless and shake your head in maddening disbelief, too. Great drama, good suspense, and plenty of non-stop action with hints of romance through and through.

Burn

In Linda Howard's Burn, she took us on a wild cruise ride that was destined for destruction. Jenner Redwine worked at a meat packing plant, before she won the lottery which changed everything in a blink of an eye. From there, she moved to Florida from Chicago and made new friends and a new life. But when she boarded that cruise, she didn't know what she was in for, when she met Cael Traylor and his crew. Kidnapped and threatened, she was Cael's cover to be his lover. This was when he was doing surveillance on a potential homegrown terrorist of his own. On both sides of the coin, they butted heads and sparks flew.  They did get underneath each other's skin, until they fall in love for real, when danger loomed behind them from a sick and dying man on a sinking cruise ship. We saw how Jenner clawed her way out of this one and found true love, while Cael softened up his façade on a nasty cruise ride to Hawaii. It was up to them to jump ship before it's too late. What an explosive novel.

This was a hot and steamy romantic suspense. I did care about Jenner, especially when her friends treated her like dirt, like when she won the lottery.  There were nothing but sour grapes in my opinion.  I liked the concept on doing it on the cruise ship for the main location and setting for this novel, too. I also loved the dual locations of Chicago and southern Florida as well. This would steam up your window and leave you swooning in the end of this novel. Great drama, terrific non-stop action with plenty of romance and suspense to heat up a cold day.

Strangers in the Night

If you love great romantic suspense novels, you'll enjoy this trio of short stories in Strangers in the Night by Linda Howard. In Lake of Dreams, Thea Marlow dreamt of making love to her dream lover. When she met him in person, they realized they were meant to be through the hands of time, interpreting their dreams, when they were falling in love and fought for what they want. In Blue Moon, Sheriff Jackson Brody had been called to Deliliah Jones's home, and became under her spell. She was no witch, but she had healing powers and predicted they were meant to be by his aura. In White Out, Hope Jackson was stuck in a cabin during a blizzard, when Price Tanner needed mouth-to-mouth resusitation to warm him up. When there was a radio broadcast on an escaped convict, she didn't know what to believe. When the truth came out, they planned a future together. Three times the romance and suspense.

This was a lovely introduction of three romantic short stories in this one collection for this novel. Each one had something different with a cute little storyline premise from dreams, to auras, and then first aid during a blizzard. I cared about the three couples in a short amount of time. I loved each central specific location for this short story collection. All of them were strangers in the night too, per se.  Great drama, good action and romance, and lots of intrigue and mystery.

Open Season

If you love romantic suspense with a hint of humor, you'll love Open Season by Linda Howard. On Daisy Minor's 34th birthday, she wanted a family of her own. With encouragement from her family, she became independent and transformed herself with a makeover. Tired of her boring life as a librarian, she literally let her hair down and became a party girl.  One night, she witnessed something horrible, when the killer was now after her. What she had gotten involved to, was a heated relationship with the chief of police, and a government coverup, when her life was on the line.  Before she can share her life with the right man, she would have to save it first. This is a delightful read to those who love happy endings.

This was a fantastic romantic suspense from Linda Howard as well. I did care for Daisy, especially when she transformed herself from boring to exciting. And even more so, when she saw something she shouldn't see. I did like the Hillsboro, Alabama setting for the location of this novel. I did like the sparking chemistry between Daisy and hunky Jack Russo. This would make your heart pound and your pulse race with every page turn. Great drama, excellent suspense and sparking romance, and great non-stop action to the end.
