The Memory Lingers On

In Mary Higgins Clark's The Melody Lingers On, this startling mystery novel takes a storyline straight from the news that would blow you away. Lane Harmon is a young widow with a 4-year-old daughter named Katie. As an associate to the famous Glady Harper, an interior design, they get to interior design Anne Bennett's townhouse and for the Countess Sylvie De Marco's condo. And that's when she met Eric Bennett, the son of Parker Bennett, the notorious businessmen who ripped people's money off with a fraudulent fund. He had maintained his innocence and his eyes set for Lane and Katie. Meanwhile, the FBI has been looking for Parker Bennett himself, who had assumedly faked his own death and lived in paradise under another name. The people who were closest to him, besides his family, were under suspicion and possibly involved with him. One of them named Ranger Cole is avenging his late wife Judy's death in pure hatred and anguish.  Except for Anne, who had a music box that she played music, waiting for Parker to be "alive", the FBI also believed Eric had something to do with it. The closer the FBI dig into his background, the deeper Lane has conflicting feelings for him, they learn about his shocking dark side in the end when things come to a head for Lane and the FBI when he turned the table on them.

This was a gripping and intense mystery that hits close to home for today's news headline. I cared for Lane for a single mother who did the best she could to provide for Katie. I did think she could handle Glady's brash and demeaning behavior in the workplace. I thought Eric was a bit of a devil in disguise who might be hiding something and showed his true colors. I did feel for the poor people who had lost their savings in Parker's hand and dealt with a nasty blow. I did enjoy the gripping dual locations of New York City and New Jersey with compelling descriptions in every fantastic scene. This would make you want to shake your head and grimace and groan and gasp a few times with non-stop drama, action, suspense and a dollop of mystery.

Will you be there when the Melody Lingers On from the broken music box today?

I'll Walk Alone

In I'll Walk Alone, Mary Higgins Clark introduced us to a shocking and twisted tale of identity theft. Two years ago, Alexandra "Zan" Moreland's three-year-old son went missing without a trace. Now when new photographs of her abducting her own son from her stroller showed up, they shone the same spotlight on her and proclaimed her guilt. When the stacked odds were against her, she'll do anything to prove her innocence. For Zan as a rising star in interior design, someone wanted to stick it to her. Her former boss and rival, her former son's babysitter, and even her ex-husband. But there's someone who's even more sinister to do her in and had someone imitating her and ruining her in by hacking her accounts and making her look real bad. In this spine-tingling mystery, the shocking truth on who really done it and why in the end, when Zan walked alone, exonerated, with her head held high. MHC's the queen of suspense did it again with a quick read.

This was one of her finest ones yet to date. I hated the people who blamed Zan for her own abduction of her son. Everyone was out to get her. I didn't like her former boss or her ex-husband. But when the identity theft happened to her, I knew she wasn't guilty at all. I cared for Zan and hoped everything would be okay. I liked the whole story. It gave me goosebumps and made me sigh and cringe.

No Place Like Home

Mary Higgins Clark had been known as the Queen of Suspense. And she always delivered. In No Place Like Home, she gave us chills with shocking twists and turns. Liza Barton was wrongly accused of killing her mother and shooting her stepfather at the age of ten. Twenty years later, with a new name, a son and new husband, things weren't what they seemed, when Alex Nolan brought her old childhood home and knew her secret. One thing led to another from vandalism and pranks to a couple of murders. And she fell apart, right back in the spotlight, when she remembered the past and protected the identity. Right to the end, things come to a head with a disturbing twist, that someone's coming right after her, when she fought for her life.

I experienced cold chills, when I was read this mystery. It was very reminiscent of the true crime of Lizzie Borden. I began to feel real sorrow for Liza. I didn't like her step-father Ted nor Alex. Although he had true intentions, they weren't good. He railroaded her. I didn't like how the people picked on her and her son either. This one would leave you cold all over.

The Shadow of Your Smile

If you love good mysteries, you'll enjoy this newest mystery. Monica Farrell was a pediatrician in New York, who wanted to know more about her father's birth parents, and took care of children. Not only that, she was asked to testify for Sister Catherine's beautification. In the midst of things, the Gannons were after her with a shocking family secret: she was a heiress to die for. People had died to find the truth and expose the Gannons for who they were. Plenty of shocking twists and turns in this mystery to keep you guessing in the Shadow of Your Smile.

This was an excellent thriller that kept me in suspense through the novel. I loved the Catholic connection of the nun and canonization as a nice touch with a twist.  It's funny how there's always a hidden family secret twist to most mysteries and thrillers. I didn't care much for the Gannons. But Monica seemed to be a most interesting person, while she discovered more about her family history.  I do enjoy any Mary Higgins Clark mystery.
