Special review: Protect and Defend from March 2009

In the 10th installment in the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn, Protect and Defend, it took place in post 9/11. The president of Iran spent vast money on the development of a nuclear program. He didn't want to wait anymore for the war to end with his enemy, Israel, who launched one of the most daring espionage operations ever conceived. And that left a radioactive tomb and environmental disaster in its wake. Iran blamed Israel and the USA and wanted them to pay. Mitch Rapp was sent to investigate and undergo a most dangerous operation to embarrass Iran and push them to the brink. Meanwhile, the Iranian president hatched a plan to team up with Hezbollah to leave an attack of their own in its wake. It was up to Mitch to do whatever it takes to stop it from imploding in 24 hours... or die trying.

In a post 9/11 world, where terrorism to our country would always be our threat, this thriller did deliver with that kind of message.  I was always enthralled with Mitch Rapp in the CIA and his life outside it. When our country was in turmoil and a blame game started wars, I applauded for his efforts to see things through. I loved the non-stop action in the central location of the Middle East and also in the USA. I loved how he interacted with other others to get to the heart of the problem. I cared about him in the most profound way, when he'd gotten caught and into trouble. This thriller left me speechless and numb with a cold wave of sweat. Non-stop action in every suspense and tons of drama to keep you reading for the shocking ending.

American Assassin

If you're a big fan of the Mitch Rapp series, this prequel of how he'd gotten started is the one for you to fill in that gap. In American Assassin, from start to finish, Vince Flynn told us how Rapp  had gotten started with the CIA from recruitment and training to his first mission from Europe to the Middle East, right after the Pan Am Locherbie explosion. We do get to know him more and the people who helped shape him to the agent he became to be. This is an enthralling thriller of his start to make us feel for Mitch Rapp and root for this underdog throughout the rest of the series and forever.

This was an excellent prequel to see how Mitch Rapp got started with the CIA to kick off the series. I loved the insight look in Mitch's personal and professional life on how he got his butt kicked in training. I loved the location of Quantico and to Europe. The Pan Am Locherbie explosion touched on was done delicately well. There was nothing to hate in this one. Fantastic action, terrific suspense, and excellent pace for this terrific read.

Term Limits

If you love great thrillers, you'll love this stand alone political thriller by Vince Flynn. In Term Limits, the readers like myself get embroiled into political mind games between the White House and Congress. In every page, I've watched plenty of drama, suspense, violence and intrigue unfold before my eyes. We saw what's holding Michael O'Rourke, a young and new Congressman, back. Due to heated politics in Washington D.C., fireworks flew between the White House and Michael and potential threats. The tension was so thick, we could cut it with a knife. We observed how close he was to his family. We witnessed the love he had for his girlfriend, Liz Scarpatti, a reporter. I felt bad for Liz, who had a duty to report the facts for her paper, and how devoted she was with Michael. We' were shocked and awed by the actions of this players and how payback was returned with retribution. This would get you hooked into the drama and sucked in, right away.  A lot of violent drama, when it dealt with politics, then and now, and how it could affect the presidency.

This stand-alone political thriller had a lot going on. I loved the ideal concept of it, when it dealt with politics and elections. I liked Michael being fresh and new for Congress. We know how devoted he was to his family and to his career. We saw his passion for Liz, who loved a scoop for the newspaper edition. I couldn't fault anything wrong with this stand alone thriller. It had passion between Michael and Liz, lots of drama and action-packed suspense to keep you turning the pages.

Act of Treason

If you love a great political thriller, you'll enjoy this Mitch Rapp novel. This is the 9th one in the series. Act of Treason dealt with the explosion of a president-elect's brigade, which killed eighteen people. It was up to Mitch and the CIA to find out who was responsible for the hit. In the USA and overseas, Mitch discovered it was most than terrorism. It boiled down to a cover-up from someone close to home, who became a traitor to the country. A great quick read for an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

This one had a lot of intense action in this political thriller. I loved the fact, that this had a political angle as well that went straight to the White House. I loved how Mitch Rapp was there in the scene. I liked the Washington D.C.-Arlington backdrop as well. This was most definitely be a nail-biter and keep you second guessing. Great drama, non-stop action in every page, and plenty of tension to go high.
